Why and how I got into illustration
My love for illustration has grown over the last 6 years… Time really does go by in the blink of an eye doesn’t it? I can’t even remember what made me pick a pen up and doodle, but it felt so good. I started with abstract doodles and gradually found a new love for drawing and developed a style that is ever growing. This became my therapy after our daughter Milly was stillborn. They say Art has a special way of helping you heal and I honestly believe it does, it gave me a calm space and stopped my head from constantly spinning.
Here is an example of a couple of my initial doodles…
Once I found a style and could see that I could draw. I truly believed that I couldn’t draw! I went onto develop boats and ice cream patterns onto merchandise and dabbled a little bit into floral illustrations.
I did craft markets and set an Etsy store up… I named my business Mll&Flo after our daughter.
When we finally had our second daughter Isla Florence I took time out and went on maternity leave, which I had dreamed of for so many years. When that first year had whizzed by and my one year old started nursery, I then took time out for myself to take stock and work out what I wanted to do. Did I want to work on Mill&Flo and develop it further? Or did I want to look at working directly with clients doing Graphic Design and Illustration… Well I made the decision to keep Mill&Flo going on Etsy and work for myself doing Graphic Design and Illustration for clients. I love what I do, the clients I get to work with and the projects I get asked to be part of feels like a true honour.
